A European Project Coordinated by ITI Turns Data into Business for Private and Public Entities

  • The Valencian technology centre ITI coordinates this European project to help companies manage, share, and monetise their data
  • A staggering 95% of organisations cannot rely on the data they have to make accurate decisions
  • This initiative, funded by the European Union, has a budget of nearly €11 million
  • ITI collaborates with other Valencian entities such as the Universitat Politècnica de València and Grupo Gimeno, forming a team of a total of 24 partners

In the digital age, data has become one of the most valuable resources for businesses and public administrations. However, many organisations are unaware of how to efficiently manage, fully trust, and harness the full potential of their data.

In fact, 95% of organisations cannot trust the data they possess to make precise decisions. In this context, DATAMITE, the European project coordinated by ITI, a private technology centre specialised in ICT, emerges as the answer to this challenge.

This initiative, funded by the European Union and supported by 24 partners from various countries, has a budget of nearly €11 million. Its proposal offers an innovative and accessible solution that has the potential to transform the way companies manage, share, and monetise their data.

In this regard, “this project not only aims to help companies develop and optimise business plans related to data exchange, but it will also focus on creating technical materials designed to facilitate staff training, both in small and large companies as well as in public entities,” explained Jordi Arjona, coordinator of the Distributed Systems group at ITI and technical leader of DATAMITE.

Moreover, only 32% of companies are able to extract tangible and measurable value from the data they possess. This gap highlights the need for more effective tools and strategies to ensure that data is not only available but also leveraged to drive decision-making, enhance competitiveness, and create new business opportunities.

In this vein, the objective of the DATAMITE project, coordinated by ITI and involving the Universitat Politècnica de València, is to enhance monetisation, interoperability, commerce, and data exchange. To achieve this, the initiative focuses on developing tools that optimise data management, addressing key aspects such as governance, quality, and the secure and reliable exchange of information.

The Value of Data

It is important to note that poor-quality data has a significant impact on businesses, costing them between 10% and 30% of their revenue. In this sense, DATAMITE will demonstrate how data can generate value in any type of business through three use cases focused on data exchange within the company; the trade and sharing of data in data spaces; and integration with other initiatives such as data markets or Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs). To test its impact, these use cases will be deployed in six pilots covering sectors such as agriculture, energy, industry, telecommunications, and the environment.

As the project approaches its final year, Santiago Cáceres, project manager at ITI and project coordinator, concluded that “the meetings held throughout the project have marked milestones in its evolution, with numerous and significant advances. One of the main complexities of these projects is integrating the efforts of the different partners, making activities like this fundamental.” He also added that “this is important not only from a technical perspective but also from a human aspect, as it helps strengthen cohesion and bring the team closer together.”

Finally, it is important to note that this project corresponds to Grant Agreement No. 101092989 and is funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe programme.
